Privacy Policy

Last updated: 10 October 2026

This site is operated by webstart.uk. I respect your privacy and only collect the personal information needed to respond to your enquiry and provide my services. This policy explains what I collect and how I use it.

Had a letter from me about a website for your business? See If I've written to your business.

What I collect

  • Your name and contact details when you get in touch by form, email, phone or WhatsApp, or request a quote.
  • Any phone number or details you choose to include about your business or project.
  • The questions you type into the website chat assistant, if you use it (see below).
  • Basic technical data such as your IP address, used for security and spam prevention.

How I use your information

  • To reply to your enquiry and prepare a quote.
  • To deliver, host and support the services you ask me to provide.
  • To protect this website against misuse and spam.

Phone and WhatsApp

If you call, text or WhatsApp me, I'll see your phone number and anything you send, and use them only to reply and help with your enquiry. WhatsApp messages are carried by WhatsApp (part of Meta) under its own privacy policy.

The AI chat assistant

The "Talk to Jack" button may offer an AI assistant ("Get an instant answer"), powered by OpenAI. If you use it, the conversation so far and the page you're on are sent to OpenAI's API so it can write a reply. OpenAI is based in the US. It doesn't use API data to train its models, though it may keep it for a limited time to monitor for abuse, under its API data policy.

It may also offer a voice chat with the same assistant ("Talk it through out loud"). This only starts when you press "Start talking" and allow your microphone. While the call is on, your voice is streamed to OpenAI so it can listen and reply out loud, and the page you're on is shared with it. A call carries on as you move between pages of this site, and ends when you press "End call", when you leave the site, after a minute of silence or after a set time. I don't record or store your voice or the call.

  • I don't store chat conversations on my server.
  • Your browser keeps the conversation for the current tab only (in session storage), so it follows you between pages. It's deleted when you close the tab, or straight away if you press "Start a new chat".
  • To stop misuse, a one-way hash of your IP address is kept for up to two days to limit how many messages and voice calls can be made. For voice calls it's also sent to OpenAI as an anonymous identifier for its abuse monitoring. It can't be turned back into your IP address.
  • Please don't share personal details in the chat. To get a quote or book a call, use the contact form instead.

If I've written to your business

I sometimes make a free concept website for a local business and send it to them by post, with a short letter. If you've had one of those letters, this part explains what I hold about you and why.

  • What I hold:
    • your business's name, address and phone number
    • any business email address or website you list publicly
    • the owner's name, if it's shown publicly
    • the public information I used to make your concept, such as your services, opening hours, the areas you cover and a few of your public reviews
    • a note of when I contacted you and what was said
  • Where it came from: places where your business shares these details publicly, such as your Google Business Profile, your own website or social media pages, and business directories. The letter tells you where I found you.
  • Why: to make the concept, to offer you my services by letter and, if you get in touch, to talk it through.
    • I only write to business addresses.
    • I may follow up once by phone on your business number, but not if that number is registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) or Corporate TPS.
    • I don't send marketing emails or texts to sole traders or partnerships unless they've asked me to.
    • I don't share or sell your details.
  • Lawful basis: my legitimate interest in offering my services to local businesses. I only use business contact details, and you can stop it at any time.
  • Your concept website:
    • It sits at a private address that's only in your letter. It isn't linked from anywhere, and it's marked so search engines don't list it.
    • It's hosted by Cloudflare, which also tells me how many times each concept has been viewed. That count doesn't use cookies or identify you.
    • Its buttons don't contact your customers or your business; they only show a note.
  • How long:
    • If I don't hear back, I take the concept down after 60 days.
    • I keep my notes for up to 12 months after we last spoke, unless you become a client.
  • Saying no: just tell me, by phone, WhatsApp, email or post. I'll take your concept down straight away and won't contact you again. Keeping you off my list does mean keeping a small record of your business name, phone number and postcode, so I can make sure of that. If you'd also like everything else deleted, just say so.
  • Where it's kept: my notes are kept in a private, access-controlled system. Cloudflare and GitHub, the services I use to host the concepts and store my records, may process them in the US under their standard data protection terms.

You have the same rights as anyone else under "Your rights" below, including an absolute right to object to direct marketing at any time.

Lawful basis

I process your data on the basis of taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, performing that contract, and my legitimate interest in running and securing my business and in offering my services to local businesses (see above).

How long I keep data

I keep personal data only for as long as reasonably needed to handle your enquiry, provide services, and meet legal or accounting obligations.

Sharing your data

I do not sell your personal data. I may share information with trusted service providers — such as hosting, email and domain providers, Cloudflare and GitHub for the concept websites, and OpenAI for the chat and voice assistant — only where necessary to deliver my services to you.

Your rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and you may object to certain processing. To do so, email me at enquiries@webstart.uk. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
